Theme 3 - Local Produce

PRESS RELEASE MARCH 2004

Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr Ramnik Kavia will sample the best of both worlds by tasting a new "Leicestershire Curry" - using local vegetables and exotic spices.

Shoppers will also be able to try this delicious dish at the launch of a new Leicestershire Produce booklet and website on Wednesday, March 31, from 12pm to 2pm.

A chef from Mirch Masala Restaurant will show how local produce can be used to create the curry with a cookery demonstration at Leicester Farmers’ Market, Market Place.

Co-ordinator Jessica Slee said: “This event will show how you can buy fresh local foods and combine them with Asian spices to create the nation's favourite meal - a curry. Buying Leicestershire Produce is a brilliant way to help local businesses. You can enjoy the county's finest foods and give local farmers much-needed support at the same time."

All of the businesses listed in the new guides are truly local, have met strict criteria and passed an on-farm inspection as part of the Leicestershire Produce Mark scheme.

The booklet features detailed information on Leicestershire producers and the website, www.leicestershireproduce.net, offers a searchable function to find local products easily.

Visitors at the launch will also have the chance to win a meal for two at Mirch Masala or Bobby's Restaurant through a Leicestershire Produce competition.
