Wildlife

Summary

It is easy to forget, living in a manmade city, that we are an integral part of nature and totally dependent on it for our food, energy, water and breathable air. Conservation is therefore enlightened self-interest as we derive so many benefits from nature.

Biodiversity in Leicester is surprisingly high. Important Leicester sites have been classified as Sites of Interest for Nature Conservation (SINCs) but inadequate management is reducing their value. Other ‘Biodiversity Enhancement Sites’ have been identified where habitat improvements would help to improve the city’s overall value to wildlife. Even buildings can help wildlife by providing roosting and nesting opportunities. Gardens comprise a third of Leicester’s green spaces and are crucial in maintaining and enhancing biodiversity in Leicester.

Whilst our actions in Leicester obviously affect local biodiversity, we also cause significant impacts on the wider world. Globally, human impact has been so great that only around 10% of the earth is now considered to be ‘natural’. Life on earth is experiencing one of the highest rates of extinction in its three billion year history. Buying organically grown food, non-peat composts and FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) labelled timber will all help wildlife.

Just as humans have the capacity to alter and destroy natural habitats and extinguish other species, we also have the ability to protect and restore biodiversity. We have a responsibility to act as custodians for the environment and the diversity of life.

Leicester's vision:

Leicester will protect and enhance wildlife habitats in our city and ensure its actions have only positive impacts on wildlife in the wider world.

The Issue

Biological Diversity or Biodiversity = the variety of life in all its forms, levels and combinations

It is easy to forget, living in a manmade city and absorbed by our work, social life and day-to-day needs, that we are an integral part of nature and totally dependent on it for our food, energy, water and air.
