Assessment of Buildings

Candidate buildings are assessed on the following basis.

Each winner must score at least 10 points and also have at least one SHOWCASE FEATURE. Points are shown in brackets.

Showcase features:
- Solar thermal system (5)
- Photo-voltaic system (10)
- Passive stack ventilation system (5)
- Renewable fuel heating (10)
- Rainwater harvesting system (5)
- Reed bed grey water treatment system (10)
- Compost toilet (5)
- Green (vegetated) roof (5)

Points are also awarded for the following features in six categories. The point ranges are used to award a higher score where the feature is more extensive within the building.

WASTE 

Designated recycling areas (0-3) and on-site composting (0-2)

ENERGY 

Heat recovery ventilation system (0-3), insulation (0-3), low-energy lighting (0-3), intelligent lighting controls (0-3), gas condensing boiler (0-1), double glazing throughout (0-1) draught lobby entrance (0-1) and specific design for passive solar gain (0-3)

WATER 

Flow restricted tap jets (0-1), push taps (0-1), push taps (0-1), movement detector taps (0-1), waterless urinals (0-3) and urinal flushing controls (0-1)

TRANSPORT

Cycle parking, security and showers (0-3)

ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS

FSC timber (0-3), PVC alternatives (0-3), natural floor coverings (0-3), low VOC paints and varnishes (0-3) and recycled materials in building fabric (0-3)

BIODIVERSITY

Grounds managed to provide/protect habitat (0-3) and wildlife breeding aids such as bird/bat/insect boxes (0-3)
