Local Action

There is a huge amount of environmental activity in Leicester, involving the whole community of the city. To see what the partners of the Leicester Environment Partnership are doing, visit the web sites listed on the links page.

The list below offers links to some of the environmental work and projects underway in Leicester:

Energy, Water and Resources

Leicester Better Buildings - raising the environmental standard of new buildings in the city and encouraging environmental refurbishment to existing buildings.

Leicester Energy Efficiency Advice Centre - The centre, based at 2-4 Market Place South (opposite the market), offers practical advice and solutions to reduce energy useage and costs in the home and for businesses. A range of enegy saving products are also on sale.

Green Doctor - The Green Doctor visits homes in deprived wards of Leicester and offers advice and practical help on energy saving measures such as low energy light bulbs and loft insulation. (N.B. This project is not currently running).

Environmental Awareness and Education

EcoHouse - Leicester's award winning environmental show-home.

EMAS in Schools - Leicester has the first schools in the UK to achieve the prestigious Eco Management and Audit Standard.

Keep Leicester Cool - campaign to raise awareness about global warming and encourage local action to reduce Leicester's greenhouse gas emissions.

Little Rotters - Composting Clubs are set up in schools encouraging schools to compost their waste.

Rotten Resource Centre - teaching children about composting on a large scale, with a 'composting classroom' at Lount Comosting Facility.

Open Spaces and Enjoyment

Allotments for All - this project is helping to reverse the trend of falling interest in allotments. Many Leicester allotments have waiting lists!

Pollution

The EQUAL website is a European funded pilot project which provides up to date local air quality and traffic congestion information to the general public.

Transport

Safe Routes to School - Helping kids to walk, cycle, or get the bus to school.

Bikes for All - a new project in 2004 to refurbish redundant and thrown away bicycles.

Leicester Bike Park - based in the Town Hall, the Bike Park offers 130 secure cycle parking spaces, plus a repair service, shop and bike hire.

Waste

Groundwork Recycling Solutions - 300 local organisations and businesses have signed up to recycle a wide range of their waste materials; including paper, cardboard, drinks cans, steel tins, foil, printer cartridges, etc.

Construction Waste Recycling - recycling waste materials such as brick, timber and metal, from construction sites across Leicester
