Partnership

Partnership has always been fundamental to Leicester's Environment City programme. The award was given to the city community as a whole, not to any one organisation (see About Environment City). Over the years, several partnership structures have been established but currently this function is fulfilled by the Leicester Environment Partnership (LEP).

The LEP was established in June 2001 to improve co-ordination between the many environmental agencies operating in Leicester and to promote more environmental consideration amongst others (see aims).

The LEP meets monthly, usually at the EcoHouse. It is chaired by David Nicholls, Chief Executive of Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire, and the secretariat is provided by the Environment Team of Leicester City Council. The LEP is formally represented on the Leicester Strategic Partnership (by the LEP Chair) and is one of the key 'theme partnerships' that contribute to the ongoing vision and strategic direction for Leicester.

The LEP has approximately 25 members representing 12 partner organisations.

The LEP's main work to date has been to prepare the Leicester Environment Strategy - an ambitious road map for environmental change in the city. In addition, the LEP has overseen the production of Leicester's Climate Change Strategy. It also has responsibility for delivering the environmental programme supported by Neighbourhood Renewal Funding and for overseeing progress towards the environmental goals in Leicester's Community Strategy.
