Welcome to Leicester Environment City

The Environment City website offers comprehensive information about the environmental scene in Leicester. The site is managed by the Leicester Environment Partnership a network of all the main environmental organisations operating in the city. We have tried not to duplicate information held in the partners own web sites so we have included lots of links to help you find out more details where required.

The Big Switch Off

The Big Switch Off campaign is being led by Local Authorities within Leicester and Leicestershire and is targeted at all Leicestershire residents.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the need to conserve energy which will give financial savings and reduce our CO2 emissions.

This can be achieved by not leaving electrical equipment on standby and turning off unnecessary electrical appliances and lighting.

The campaign will culminate in a 2 hour switch off event on Friday 17th October. The time and date have been chosen to coincide with peak energy demand and as a lead in to National Energy Saving Week.

What is Transition Leicester?

Transition Leicester is a local community response to the challenges of climate change and peak oil. It is part of a rapidly growing network of Transition initiatives in the UK and around the world.

Transition Leicester has two main goals:

  • To greatly reduce Leicester's carbon emissions, so the city contributes its share of the global effort to help avoid dangerous climate change.
  • To improve the city's resilience, so that we are able to provide for core needs such as; food, energy, entertainment and transportation - even if prices of fossil fuels substantially increase.

Transition Leicester also has another very important goal:

  • To create a positive vision of a future Leicester where we meet our energy needs without using fossil fuels and to create a vibrant, abundant and wonderful community in which to live.
